Herbs, annual, shrubby, erect to 1 m tall. Stems glabrous, hollow. Leaves alternate; stipules brownish glands; petiole to 1.5 cm, pilose; leaf blade lanceolate in outline, violin-shaped, to 10 × 5 cm, abaxially sparsely pilose, glabrescent, adaxially glabrous, base cuneate, margin shallowly and irregularly toothed, apex obtuse. Inflorescence a terminal cyme forking ca. 4 times, cyathia densely clustered; basal bracts similar to leaves but with a bright orange-red blotch at base, upper bracts progressively smaller, more lanceolate, subsessile, entirely red. Cyathia ca. 3.5 × 3 mm; involucre barrel-shaped, glabrous, lobes ca. 1.5 × 1.5 mm, rounded, margin deeply and bluntly toothed; glands 1(or 2), funnel-shaped, opening transversely elliptic, ca. 2 mm wide. Male flowers: bracteoles ligulate, feathery; stamens ca. 4 mm. Female flower: ovary pedicellate, glabrous; styles ca. 2 mm, bifid almost to base. Fruiting pedicel reflexed to 5.5 mm; capsule deeply 3-lobed, ca. 4 × 5 mm. Seeds ovoid-conical, ca. 2.8 × 2.2 mm, apex acute; seed coat sharply warty, blackish brown. Fl. and fr. May-Nov. 2n = ?56.

Erect annual herb to 1 m. Leaves: petiole to 1.5 cm; lamina panduriform; margin irregularly toothed; base cuneate; apex obtuse. Inflorescence of densely clustered cyathia in terminal cymes. Basal bracts similar to leaves but with a bright orange-red blotch at the base; upper bracts smaller, more completely red. Involucral gland 1, barrel shaped, with a transversely elliptic opening. Capsule 4 × 5 mm, exserted on a reflexed pedicel. Seeds blackish-brown bearing sharply pointed warts.

Hierba, de 0.30 a 1 m. Hojas alternas (las superiores opuestas). Lámina pandurada, de elíptica a ovado-elíptica, de 2.5 a 10 por 1 a 5.5 cm. Margen entero o dentado. Inflorescencias ciatias en cimas compactadas y fasciculadas. Frutos de casi 4 mm de longitud. Se reconoce por su hábito herbáceo, por sus hojas con el borde dentado, a veces con la lámina pandurada, por sus inflorescencias compactas y por las ciatias con una glándula bilabiada. Esta última caracteristica la diferencia de Euphorbia heterophylla la cual es muy similar, pero presenta la glándula circular.

Euphorbia cyathophora Murray, es una especie fanerógama perteneciente a la familia Euphorbiaceae.
Distribución y hábitat
Se encuentra en América del Norte en Estados Unidos y México y América Central, hasta Sudamérica y el Caribe donde es común en áreas perturbadas de climas tropicales y templados.
Descripción
Es una hierba anual que alcanza hasta 50 cm de largo. Tiene el tallo ascendente, de color verde, algo glauco. Las hojas son alternas en la base y opuestas arriba, lámina membranosa de 5-10 x 1-3 cm, ovadas, lanceoladas o sublineares, enteras o dentadas, glabras o con pelos escasos, verdes, las de la inflorescencia a menudo rojo brillante en la base. La inflorescencia en ciatios glabros, cortamente pubescentes, glándulas aplanadas, fuertemente bilabiadas. El fruto es una cápsula glabra, ovoide, de hasta 4 mm de largo y 5 mm de ancho; con semillas truncadas-elipsoides, de hasta 3 mm de largo, superficie tuberculada, apenas anguladas.
A menudo se confunde con Euphorbia heterophylla, que es un pariente cercano de esta maleza pantropical.
Taxonomía
Euphorbia cyathophora fue descrita por Johan Andreas Murray y publicado en Commentationes Societatis Regiae Scientiarum Gottingensis 7: 81–83, pl. 1. 1786.[1]
- Etimología
Euphorbia: nombre genérico que deriva del médico griego del rey Juba II de Mauritania (52 a 50 a. C. - 23), Euphorbus, en su honor – o en alusión a su gran vientre – ya que usaba médicamente Euphorbia resinifera. En 1753 Carlos Linneo asignó el nombre a todo el género.[2]
