Description

Erect shrubby herb or sometimes a small shrub up to 1.25 m tall. Leaves opposite, more or less broadly ovate to elliptic, largest 8-23 cm long, abruptly narrowing into a long decurrent base, hairless or with scattered hairs above, hairless or with fine short hairs along the midrib and larger veins beneath; petiole up to 3 cm long but mostly integrated into the decurrent leafbase. Flowers in series terminal cymose clusters, often so close together as to form an almost continuous spike-like inflorescence, 5-35 cm long. Axis and bracteoles hairless or finely velvety, without any glands. Calyx 5-9 mm long, hairless or sparsely hairy on the lobes, without glands. Corolla orange-red, red or scarlet tube and outside of the lobes with longer curly hairs and numerous stalked, capitate glands; tube linear 2-3 cm long; lobes elliptic 9-14 mm long. Capsule 3-3.8 cm long.
