Parrot New Zealand (keluarga Strigopidae)[1] terdiri dari dua genera parrot, Nestor dan Strigops.[2] Genus Nestor terdiri dari Kea, Kākā, Kākā Pulau Norfolk dan Kākā Pulau Chatham,[3][4] sementara genus Strigops hanya terdiri dari Kākāpō.[3] Kesemua spesies yang masih ada berasal dari New Zealand sementara dua spesies yang telah pupus ditemui di pulau-pulau berdekatanseperti Pulau Chatham di New Zealand, dan Pulau Norfolk dan Pulau Phillip di Australia. Nama-nama spesies moden biasa adalah Kea, Kākā dan Kākāpō, merupakan nama-nama asal dari bahasa Māori.[5]
Terdapat dua spesies yang masih tinggal dan sekurang-kurangnya satu spesies pupus dari puak Nestorini telah didokumenkan selengkapnya. Sangat sedikit diketahui berkenaan Kākā Chatham.
Kākāpō (Strigops habroptila) merupakan satu-satunya ahli dalam puak Strigopini.
All common names for species in this family are the same as the traditional Māori names.[5] The word Kākā derives from the ancient Proto-Polynesian word meaning parrot.[7] Kākāpō is a logical extension of that name as pō means night, resulting in Kākā of the night or Night parrot, reflecting the species' nocturnal behaviour.[8] The etymology of Kea in Māori is less clear, and might be onomatopoeic of its call kee-aah.[3][9] In the anglicized versions of the names, the long versions of the vowels with diacritic marks , ā and ō, are replaced by a or o. In the Māori language, this changes the meaning of Kākā from parrot to dress or clothing.[10][11]
