Upperparts: grey
Throat: plain silvery grey
Breast and belly: rufous barred whitish or grey
Flanks: rufous
Thighs: rufous
Tail: blackish with three relatively large white spots
Irides: usually yellow, occasionally orange
Legs and feet: bright yellow
Immature
Upperparts: blackish brown
Throat: white
Breast: few or no spots
Belly: white
Flanks: broadly barred dark brown
Thighs: white
Legs and feet: yellow
Variation between subspecies: toussenelii is slightly larger than macroscelides.
