Etymologia

Neotoma: gr. νεος neos – nowy, inny; τομος tomos – tnący, od τεμνω temnō – ciąć; w aluzji do zębów, które wskazywały na nowy typ gryzonia, różniący się od Mus, do którego pierwotnie zaliczano gatunek typowy[8].

Teonoma: anagram nazwy Neotoma[9]. Gatunek typowy: Myoxus drummondi Richardson, 1828 (= Mus cinereus Ord, 1815).

Teanopus: rodzaj Teonoma J.E. Gray, 1843; πους pous, ποδος podos – stopa[10]. Gatunek typowy: Teanopus phenax Merriam, 1903.

Homodontomys: gr. ὁμως homōs – zarówno, razem, to samo; οδους odous, οδων odōn – ząb; μυς mys, μυός myos – mysz[3]. Gatunek typowy: Neotoma fuscipes Baird, 1857.
