Pileus fleshy, thin, tough, conic, becoming hemispheric or convex, 1.5-2.5 cm. broad; surface reddish or tawny, often darker in the center, cracking and forming irregular scales, virgate toward the margin, sulcate on the margin: lamellae subdistant, rounded behind or emarginate, slightly adnexed, obscurely dentate on the edges, white or pallid: spores oblong, smooth, hyaline, 10-18X5-9^1 cystidia fusoid, 65-80X4-8 ju: stipe central, short, solid, sometimes narrowed downward, pruinose or slightly furfuraceous, white or pallid, 1.2-2 cm. long, 3-6 mm. thick.
Type i.ocai,tty: Ohio.
Habitat: Crevices of dry wood or old fence rails.
Distribution: New York to Indiana and west to Montana and Colorado; also in Europe.
