Considered an easygoing and adaptable fish of long standing with aquarists. Is noteworthy among lake mouth brooders by the fact that both parents participate in the incubation of the brood, which implies that the mates are bonded in a monogamous relationship lasting until at least as long as the fry are incubated (Ref. 6770).

The spangled cichlid (Limnochromis auritus) is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika where it is found in deep waters. This species can reach a length of 13 centimetres (5.1 in) TL. It can also be found in the aquarium trade.
