Lateral line complete; 1 scale row between lateral line and pelvic-fin origin; 13-14 predorsal scales; dorsal-fin origin behind insertion of last pelvic-fin ray; distance between dorsal-fin origin and middle of caudal-fin base equal to distance between middle of eye and dorsal-fin origin; dark lateral stripe from upper extremity of gill-opening to caudal-fin base, more intense posteriorly, continued on caudal fin by a small black spot at base of median rays; dorsolateral stripe present, separated from dark lateral stripe by narrow light lateral stripe; 1.5-2 scales along dorsal midline between base of last dorsal-fin ray and vertical through anal-fin origin; caudal fin light yellow in life, with a very thin posterior dark margin (Ref. 36949).

This is one of the northernmost ranging species of Rasbora (Ref. 36949). Reaches up to at least 5.7 mm SL (Ref. 43281).

Rasbora septentrionalis is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Rasbora which is found in the Mekong Basin in Yunnan and Laos.
