Scale formula: 9.5/40-42/4.5 (Ref. 2940, 81282) or 8.5-9.5/40-42/4.5 (Ref. 81639). 12 scales around caudal peduncle; 14-16 anal-fin branched rays (Ref. 2940, 81282, 81639). 8 dorsal-fin branched rays; sides plain or with irregular markings; back dark (Ref. 2940, 81282). Description: body elongate, its dorsal profile slightly rounded; eye large; dorsal fin positioned on posterior half of body; anal fin beginning below midpoint of dorsal-fin base; tips of pectoral fins separated from pelvic-fin insertions by distance equal to their length; D:III,8; A:III,14-16; P:I,15; V:I,8; caudal fin forked, with lower lobe longer than upper (Ref. 2940, 81282, 81639). Gill rakers small (Ref. 2940, 81282). Coloration: back dark, scales black-edged; sides with dark, mid-lateral band running from gill cover to caudal fin, a little paler below dorsal fin; no vertical bars on sides (Ref. 2940, 81282, 81639).
