Description: deep-bodied; frontal profile straight to slightly concave; caudal fin rounded (Ref. 52307).Coloration: body in both sexes bronze-brown, darker dorsally; opercles of males bluish, and some body scales with a red base; numerous reddish maculae in dorsal, caudal and anal fins, in latter some lightly-ocellated; when courting, lower body often with greenish flush (Ref. 52307).
Biology

Found in various habitats and dams; feeds on insects, snails and plants; breeds in spring and early summer; males construct a sand-scrape nest in shallow water (Ref. 7248). Agamous, ovophilic (Ref. 52307) maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 7248, 52307). Females mouthbrood eggs and larvae (Ref. 7248).
