Distinguished from all other species of Hemiancistrus except H. chlorostictus, H. votouro, H. megacephalus and H. macrops by the presence of light dots on all fins and the lateral and dorsal portions of body. H. meizospilos differs from H. chlorostictus and H. votouro by the much larger light markings (one large dot occupying one to three plates vs. one to three dots per plate) and from H. votouro by the larger orbit diameter (16.7-21.0% HL vs. 14.5-16.7% HL). H. meizospilos is distinguished from H. megacephalus and H. macrops by the area that light dots occupying each body plate (one large dot occupying one to three plates and skin between them vs. one large dot occupying only one body plate) (Ref. 54753).

Hemiancistrus meizospilos

Hemiancistrus meizospilos[1] is a species of catfish in the family Loricariidae. [2] It is sometimes known as the southern orange-spotted pleco.[3] The type locality of H. meizospilos is given as the Chapecó River in the vicinity of Coronel Freitas in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.[4]

Distribution

Hemiancistrus meizospilos is native to South America, where it occurs in the Uruguay River basin in Brazil.

Description

Hemiancistrus meizospilos was described in 2004 by Alexandre R. Cardoso and José Pezzi da Silva alongside the related species Hemiancistrus votouro, which is also native to the Uruguay River basin. The species reaches 14.9 cm (5.9 inches) SL making it one of the smaller members of Loricariidae. H. meizospilos is distinguished from other Hemiancistrus members by the Lighty colored spots found on all of the fins and the dorsal segment of the body.
