Calephelis virginiensis is a very small, year-round resident of the southeastern United States (Scott 1986). Habitats are open pine woods, savannah, salt-marsh meadows and grassy areas of the coastal plain. Host plants are herbaceous and restricted to one species Cirsium horridulum (Compositae). Eggs are laid on the host plant singly. Individuals overwinter as X. There are 3 flights each year in the northern part of their range, with the approximate flight times late Apr.- May31, July1-Aug30, Sept1- early Oct.; in Fla. there are multiple flights year round (most commonly Aug.1-Oct. 31); in Tex. there are multiple flights Mar.1-Nov31 (Scott 1986).
