The story of this species is bit confusing.
First the date: 1883 or 1884? It was first found by Hermann Fol in the winter of 1880-1881 in the Bay of Villefranche. He described it in an article published in 1883 as Cyttarocylis cistellula (Fol, H. 1883a.). This same article was translated into English and published in 1883 in England (Fol, H. 1883b.). Fol described it again in another article published in 1884 (Fol, H. 1884).Although it was described in two 1883 articles in two languages, the 1884 publication is usually taken as the description date.
Secondconfusion is the genus name.Fol described as a Cyttarocylis species.Brandt transfered it to the genus Codonella (Brandt, K. 1906). There it remained from 1906 to 1938.Kofoid and Campbell in 1939 transfered it to its own genus Codonaria (Kofoid, C.A., Campbell, A.S. 1939).Some workers, not familiar with the 1939 revision, still call the species Condonella cistellula.
If you want to find this organism in the Biodiversity Heritage Library you need to search all 3 species names 'Cyttarocylis cistellula', 'Codonella cistellula' and 'Codonaria cistellula'
