Description: somewhat less deep-bodied than most congeners; frontal profile straight to slightly concave; caudal fin subtruncate to truncate (Ref. 52307).Coloration: body olive to light brown; 2 dark horizontal stripes and/or 8-9 dark vertical bars occasionally visible mid-body (Ref. 52307). Males: unpaired fins may have small, reddish maculae; normally several reddish egg spots present on anal fin; cheeks and opercles often bluish-gray (Ref. 52307).

Prefers still or slow-flowing water and dense vegetation; feeds primarily on insects, small snails and other invertebrates and occasionally small fish (Ref. 7248, 52307). Agamous, ovophilic (Ref. 52307) female mouthbrooder, breeds in summer (Ref. 7248, 52307).
