Lithostege griseata griseata (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Taxonomy.This species belongs to the “farinata group” (sensu Rajaei Sh. et al, 2011). This species group consists of following taxa: Lithostege notata Bang-Haas, 1906; L. fissurata Mabille, 1888; L. parva Shchetkin, 1965; L. turkmenica Tsvetajev, 1971; L. farinata (Hufnagel, 1767); L. coassata (Hübner, [1825]); L. ancyrana Prout, 1938; L. narynensis Prout, 1938; L. griseata griseata (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) ; L. palaestinensis Amsel, 1935; L. luminosata Christoph, 1885; L. luigi Viidalepp, 1992; L. infuscata (Eversmann, 1837); L. flavicornata (Zeller, 1847).
The members of this group are characterized by: Valves with a harpe of variable shape, extended into a basally curved or arched, apically spined dorsal arm, often directed towards valve apex; saccus short and broad. Most species of this group have white or off-white wings without or with only faint pattern.
Food-plants: Erysimum cheiranthoides (Cruciferae [Brassicaceae]) (Parsons et al., 1999), Descurainia sophia (Heinicke & Müller, 1976).
Distribution. This species distributed in from N Spain and Central Europe to Kazakhstan and E Kyrgyzstan and also in N Iran (Karaj) (see Map 6 in Rajaei Sh. et al. 2011).
Lithostege griseata, the grey carpet, is a moth of the family Geometridae. The species was first described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775.[1] It is found in most of Europe, from Great Britain and the Iberian Peninsula to the Ural Mountains and further east to central Asia and Transcaucasia, Asia Minor and the Near East.
The wingspan is 28–31 mm. Adults are on wing from May to July.[2]
The larvae feed on the developing seeds of Descurainia sophia and Erysimum cheiranthoides. They are green with a pale line along the side.
