Perennial glabrous herb. Root long, slender, branched, fascicular-subfascicular with small tuberous thickenings. Caudex short, with scaly leaves. Scaly leaves sessile, rosulate, brown, triangular to triangular-ovate. Flowering stem 1-3, 15-25 cm high, erect, or ascending, simple. Leaves sessile, alternate, simple, linear, obtuse, entire, 6-25 x 1-2 mm. Inflorescence corymbose, dense, compact, many flowered. Flowers 6-merous, bisexual, pedicel 0.5-3 mm long. Sepals 6, ovate, fleshy, obtuse, 2-4 x 0.8-2 mm. Corolla gamopetalous, lobes connate nearly to the middle, campanulate, dark-violet, drying pale violet, oblong-lanceolate, acute, 6-12 x 1.5-2 mm. Stamens 12, antesepalous equal to or slightly longer than petals, 3.5-10 mm long, epipetalous shorter than petals, 3-9 mm long. Nectar scales square, 0.2-0.5 x 0.2-0.5 mm. Follicles 6, erect, 8-12 x 1-2 mm. Seeds, 0.8-1 x 0.2-0.3 mm, 13-29 per fruit, oblong, brown with longitudinal striae.
