Perennial; culm 30-60 cm high, densely caespitose, erect, glabrous; sheaths shorter than the internode. Blades coriaceous, 2-5 mm wide, margins involute; ligule long ciliate. Panicle 10-15 cm long, loose, branches ascending, scabrous, axils glabrous. Spikelets lanceolate, slightly compressed, 5-10 mm long by 2.5 mm wide, 6-15-flowered, ascending or slighlty appressed, distinctly pedicellate, grayish or slightly purplish; glumes broadly lanceolate, acuminate, 1-nerved; lower glume 1-1.5 mm long; upper glume 1.5-1.7 mm long; lemmas about 2 mm long, ovate, acute; minutely punctate, the keels distinctly scabrous, the lateral nerves distinct, subparallel, about 2/3 the length of the lemma; palea persistent, the keels arc-shaped, ciliate-scabrous; rachilla persistent, slightly compressed; stamens 3, the anthers oblong, blackish-purple, about 0.5 mm long. Caryopsis elliptical, slightly compressed, obscurely striolate, about 2/3 mm long.

Panicle open, 10–15 cm; branches ascending, scabrous, glabrous in axils. Spikelets palely purplish, lanceolate, 5–10 × ca. 2.5 mm, 5–15-flowered, pedicellate; rachilla persistent. Glumes broadly lanceolate, 1-veined, apex acuminate, lower glume 1–1.5 mm, the upper 1.5–1.7 mm. Lemmas ovate, apex acute, minutely punctate, keel scabrous, lateral veins distinct, subparallel. Palea persistent, keels arc-shaped, ciliate-scabrous. Stamens 3; anther oblong, blackish purple, ca. 0.5 mm. Caryopsis elliptical, slightly compressed, obscurely striate.
