Plants annual, ca. 50 cm, glabrous. Stem procumbent or prostrate, green or purple, swollen basally, with fibrous, adventitious roots, branched. Leaves alternate; petiole 1-2 cm, with 1 or 2 pairs of subulate basal glands; leaf blade gray-green abaxially, dark green adaxially, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, rarely subrhombic, (2.5-)3-8 × 1.5-3.5 cm, with 2 or 3 pairs of setose glands at basal margin, abaxially glabrous or midvein sparsely pubescent, adaxially white pilose on veins, lateral veins 5-7 pairs, base cuneate, margin crenate-serrate, teeth mucronulate, apex acute or acuminate. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 1-flowered; peduncles shorter than leaves. Pedicels slender, bracteate above middle; bracts ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 4-5 × 2-2.5 mm, abaxially pilose on midvein, margin denticulate, apex long acuminate. Flowers purple or blue-purple, large, 3-4.5 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, broadly ovate to orbicular, 2.5-6 × 4-5 mm, margin entire, apex conspicuously mucronulate, abaxial midvein green. Lower sepal broadly funnelform, margin entire, apex conspicuously mucronulate; mouth vertical, ca. 2 cm wide, tip mucronulate. Upper petal cucullate, orbicular, ca. 1.1 cm in diam., apex emarginate, mucronulate, abaxial midvein in-conspicuously carinate; lateral united petals ± clawed, ca. 1.7 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes suborbicular; distal lobes broadly dolabriform, large, apex rounded; auricle inflexed, lunar. Filaments linear, ca. 3 mm; anthers ovoid, apex acute. Ovary fusiform, ca. 3 mm. Capsule linear-cylindric. Seeds 5 or 6, brown, oblong-globose, 1.5-2.5 mm, smooth. Fl. Jun-Oct.
