Etheostoma obama, the spangled darter, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish, a darter from the subfamily Etheostomatinae, part of the family Percidae, which also contains the perches, ruffes and pikeperches. It is endemic to the eastern United States where it is only known to occur in the Duck River and the Buffalo River, both in Tennessee.[2][3]
Steven Layman of Geosyntec Consultants and Rick Mayden of Saint Louis University studied the freshwater darters, most of which are native to Alabama and Tennessee in the United States. While they were studying color variation of Etheostoma stigmaeum, the speckled darter, Layman and Mayden discovered that there were populations with enough variation that they should be described as unique species.[2]
This species was one of five distinct species of fish that were named after former U.S. presidents and a vice-president, based on their leadership in conservation.[1][2] E. obama was named after Barack Obama, for his work "particularly in the areas of clean energy and environmental protection, and because he is one of our first leaders to approach conservation and environmental protection from a more global vision," according to Layman.[2]
Etheostoma obama males have bright orange and iridescent blue speckles, stripes, and checked patterns, with a bright fan-shaped fin that has orange stripes. The males can reach up to 48 mm (1.9 in) long, while the females reach 43 mm (1.7 in) long. 29% of the studied fish had palatine teeth.[2][4]

Etheostoma obama è un piccolo pesce d'acqua dolce appartenente alla famiglia Percidae.
Questa specie è diffusa in America del Nord, nelle acque del bacino idrografico del fiume Mississippi.
Presenta un corpo allungato e compresso ai fianchi, con testa triangolare e occhi grandi. Come gli altri Etheostoma possiede due pinne dorsali, la prima è bassa e retta da raggi grossi, la seconda è alta, opposta e simmetrica alla pinna anale. Le pinne ventrali e pettorali sono ampie. La pinna caudale è a delta. La livrea presenta un colore di fondo bruno-arancio finemente marezzato di arancione e d'azzurro, il ventre è argenteo, la gola azzurra e la testa arancione. I fianchi e tutto il peduncolo caudale sono decorati da una linea di grandi chiazze tondeggianti turchesi. La prima pinna dorsale presenta due fasce azzurre e rosse alternate mentre la seconda dorsale è grigio trasparente con la radice azzurro turchese puntinata di rosso. La pinna caudale ha la radice e i due lati azzurri, il resto è trasparente puntinato di arancione. Le altre pinne sono azzurre puntinate di arancione.
Dopo attenti studi iniziati sulle differenze delle livree maschili nel periodo riproduttivo, due ittiologi americani (Steve Layman e Rick Maydan) hanno riconosciuto come specie a sé stanti 5 sottospecie di Etheostoma stigmaeum, descrivendole nel Bulletin of the Alabama Museum of Natural History (2012) e battezzandole con i nomi di presidenti e vicepresidenti degli USA che si sono distinti per le loro politiche di conservazione delle specie animali[1]:
