Macroglossum trochilus ist ein Schmetterling (Nachtfalter) aus der Familie der Schwärmer (Sphingidae).

Merkmale

Die Falter haben eine Vorderflügellänge von 14 bis 18 Millimetern. Kopf und Thorax sind grünlich-gelb. Die Vorderflügel sind braun und haben rosafarbene oder grünliche Binden. Der Hinterleib ist orange und hat dunkle Binden und einen dunklen Haarbüschel am Hinterleibsende. Die Hinterflügel sind gelb-orange mit einem breiten braunen Außenrand. Es gibt auch blasser gefärbte Individuen, bei denen die Musterung weniger stark ausgebildet ist (forma trochiloides).[1]

Die Raupen sind grünlich gefärbt. Ihr runder Kopf ist verhältnismäßig sehr klein. Am Kopf und am Körper verlaufen rote Streifen mittig am Rücken, seitlich des Rückens und an der Bauchseite. Am neunten und zehnten Körpersegment befinden sich an den Seiten rote schräge Linien. Das Analhorn ist sehr kurz, stummelförmig und schwärzlich.[1]

Verbreitung und Lebensraum

Die Art ist in weiten Teilen Afrikas verbreitet[1] und besiedelt verschiedene offene Lebensräume.[2]

Lebensweise

Macroglossum trochilus ist wie auch das nahe verwandte Taubenschwänzchen (Macroglossum stellatarum) tagaktiv und kann beim Besuch verschiedener Blüten beobachtet werden.[1] Die Raupen ernähren sich von Färberröten (Rubia), Labkräutern (Galium)[1] und Coprosma.[2]

Macroglossum trochilus, the African hummingbird hawk-moth, is a moth of the family Sphingidae. The species was first described by Jacob Hübner in 1823. It is very common in most habitats throughout southern and eastern Africa and in the Comoro Islands.[2]

Adults are frequently seen at flowers in full sunshine.

The length of the forewings is 15–18 mm. The antennae are blackish. The head and thorax are pale olive above and very pale buff below. The abdomen is pale olive above and orange laterally. The posterior segments are darker dorsally, with a yellow distal fringe. The anal fan is very dark brown, tipped with buff. The small lateral tufts are dark brown and white. The abdomen is reddish brown below. The forewings are brown with a series of darker transverse bands. The hindwings are orange with a very broad dark reddish brown border. Both wings are brownish red below.
