Native to rainforests from Malaysia to Queensland and has long been cultivated for its edible stem on many Pacific islands and elsewhere in the tropics both for food and ornamental. The stem contains throat irritant calcium oxalate crystals or raphides that has to be removed by thorough cooking.Synonyms:
