Diagnosed from its congeners in Europe by having the following characters: mouth terminal, cleft only slightly slanted; anal fin with 10-11½ branched rays; lateral line with 40-43 + 2-3 scales; caudal peduncle 1.8-2.2 times longer than deep; snout longer than eye diameter; and interorbital distance 1.2-1.4 times eye diameter (Ref. 59043).
