Conus africanus Kiener 1848

Conus africanus, common name the African cone, is a species of predatory sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Conidae, the cone snails, cone shells or cones.^[3]

Like all species within the genus Conus, these snails are predatory and venomous. They are capable of "stinging" humans, therefore live ones should be handled carefully or not at all.

This species has been recently declared "least concern" in 2012, after it had been declared "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List in 1996.^[1]

The size of the shell varies between 13 mm and 30 mm.

Distribution

This marine species is endemic to Angola and West Africa.

Conus africanus is een in zee levende slakkensoort uit het geslacht Conus. De slak behoort tot de familie Conidae. Conus africanus werd in 1845 beschreven door Kiener.^[2]

Net zoals alle soorten binnen het geslacht Conus zijn deze slakken roofzuchtig en giftig. Zij bezitten een harpoenachtige structuur waarmee ze hun prooi kunnen steken en verlammen.^[3]
