“Prosipho elongatus Thiele, 1912 (Fig. 345)
Prosipho elongatus Thiele, 1912: 210, pl. 13, fig. 5; Smith, 1915: 70; Powell, 1958: 195; Powell, 1960: 152; Egorova, 1982: 44, fig. 187.
MATERIAL EXAMINED: Eltanin Stns 1995, 1996; USNM 613118, 72°08'S, 172°10'E, 433 m.
DISTRIBUTION: Known from the antarctic continent from 49°F to 89ºE (193-300 m) and from the Ross Sea (342-433 m).
REMARKS: Four specimens, three adult and the other half-grown, from the Ross Sea are referred to P. elongatus Thiele. The small specimen is more elongate than the others and raises the question of whether P. daphnelloides Powell, 1958 is not based upon an elongate shell of elongatus. Thiele's type measured 10 x 4 mm. One specimen from USNM 613118 measures 12.8 x 5.9 mm, with a rather inflated last whorl. Diameter/height ratios vary from 42-46 in the Ross Sea material, with four to five major spiral cords and a subsidiary one on the spire whorls of some specimens, and 20-21 spiral cords across the last whorl and base. Fine axial threads run across the whole shell surface. The protoconch is sculptured with microscopic spiral threads crossed by more pronounced axial ridges. The shell is covered by a thin, pale brown epidermis which is readily rubbed off.”
