Prosipho glacialis Thiele, 1912 (Fig. 343)

Prosipho glacialis Thiele, 1912: 208, pl. 12, fig. 34; Powell, 1958: 196; Powell, 1960: 152; Egorova, 1982: 45, fig. 189; Cantera and Arnaud, 1984: 72.

EXAMINED: Eltanin Stn 1996; USNM 612778, 72°26'S, 169°30'E, 321 m.

DISTRIBUTION: Described from Gauss Station at 89°E, P. glacialis has been recorded elsewhere around the antarctic continent from 49°E (300 m), from the Ross Sea (321-351 m), and from the Crozets.

REMARKS: Specimens from the Ross Sea are close to Thiele's figure of P. glacialis. This species is of the same type of build as gracilis Thiele, described 'from the same locality. (See also Fig. 330.) Both have three spiral cords on the penultimate whorl, with four major spiral cords on the last whorl and 4-8 across the base and canal. Few authentic specimens of gracilis have been seen. The holotype is certainly much narrower than any other specimen of either species examined, with a diameter/height ratio of 30, compared with a range of 40-47 in five specimens of glacialis. It is possible that gracilis represents one end of a range of variation of a single species.”
