體延長而呈圓柱狀，尾部側扁。脊椎骨數135。頭部淡褐色或棕褐色(生活時是黃色)；體呈紅褐色至黃褐色，體側於幼魚時散在由多角形斑點所組成的網狀斑紋，隨著成長，斑點擴散而成不規則狀斑點；幼魚時背、臀鰭鮮黃色，隨著成長，僅留下黃色緣；嘴角邊另具一條深色斜帶；鰓孔黑色。
棲地

主要棲息於淺海珊瑚、岩礁的洞穴及隙縫中。以魚類為主食，偶食甲殼類。
