Snout short, narrow, weakly pointed. Chin barbel relatively long, about equal in length to eye diameter. Space between first and second dorsal fins wide. Overall color blackish, upper lateral and leading edge of snout, orbital rims, lower margin of suborbital, lips and gular membrane black.

Morfologia

Alimentació

Menja crustacis pelàgics.[7]

Hàbitat

És un peix d'aigües profundes que viu entre 140-1945 m de fondària,[8] tot i que, normalment, ho fa entre 300-500.[5]

Distribució geogràfica

Es troba a les aigües tropicals i càlides de l'Oceà Atlàntic.[5][9]

Malacocephalus occidentalis is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van rattenstaarten (Macrouridae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1885 door Goode & Bean.

De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009.[1]
