體長橢圓形，側扁。頭中大。眼中大。口前位，斜裂；前頜骨能明顯突出；上下頜齒一或二列細小利齒，鋤骨具齒。前鰓蓋下角無硬棘。體被弱櫛鱗，易脫落；側線完整，具明顯之鱗孔，側線鱗數82-87。背鰭硬棘部及軟條部明顯缺刻，硬棘VI-VII，軟條27-29；臀鰭與第二背鰭相對，硬棘I，軟條28-34；奇鰭基底兩側無棘板，腹緣亦無棘板；胸鰭下側位，軟條12-16；腹鰭軟條7；尾鰭叉形。體呈銀紅色，腹側銀白；第一背鰭上部具黑色斑塊。
