Adults inhabit seaward reefs. They occur on reefs rich with invertebrates such as gorgonians, seawhips and black corals (Ref. 48636). Common along steep outer reef slopes deeper than 25 m in Micronesia. Usually seen as lone individuals (Ref. 48636). Juveniles pose as cleaners (Ref. 8631). May be solitary or may exist in pairs (Ref. 5503). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).

體長型,側扁;頭長為吻長之 3.7-4.4倍;眼眶間隔稍凸。眼眶前與前鰓蓋被鱗。齒圓錐狀,上下頜前側具 4犬齒。D. XII, 10;A. III, 12;P.16; L.l. 31;G.R. 4+12;背鰭棘部後方較前方高,軟條鰭緣平直;臀鰭軟條圓形;胸鰭圓形;腹鰭尖形;尾鰭深凹形,上下尾葉延長。體前半背部暗紅色,後半背部粉紅色,由斜黑線所分隔;體側後半部具許多不規則黑褐點;尾柄上下緣至延長尾葉各有一黑色帶;背鰭第 I-II棘黑色,背鰭軟條紅色,鰭緣黑色與體側黑斜線相連;尾鰭紅色;臀鰭紅色,鰭緣黑色。

棲地

主要棲息於外海珊瑚礁的向海面,亦常出現在水深25公尺以下的珊瑚礁斜坡面。喜單獨行動,白天在礁區尋找底棲性動物為食,夜間躲在礁岩縫中睡覺。活動的深度範圍可以從水深6公尺一直到水深60公尺左右。為罕見之魚種。

The lyretail hogfish (Bodianus anthioides), also known as the lyretail pigfish,[3] is a species of wrasse from the genus Bodianus. The fish can be found in the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to Tuamotu.[4] The adults occur along the seaward edges of reefs and in Micronesia are commonest below 25 metres (82 ft) in depth. They are solitary fish, forming pairs for spawning. The juvelines mimic cleaner fish.[2] The species' diet includes echinoderms, mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish.[4] It grows to a length of 25 centimetres (9.8 in).[4]
