分布於太平洋區，由印尼至土木土群島，北至日本、台灣，南至大堡礁。台灣南部及蘭嶼有記錄。

中小型之隆頭魚，體色鮮豔，是適合水族觀賞的魚類，非食用經濟魚種。臺灣分布較稀少。

體長型，側扁；口端位；上下頜前方各具一對犬齒，其餘齒圓椎狀，小而同形。D. IX, 12；A. III, 12-13；P. 13；L.l. 69-78；背鰭第I與第II棘靠近，雄魚此二棘延長；尾鰭截形，成魚上下尾鰭鰭條延長如絲。雄魚體背側黑褐色，頭及腹部黄褐色，二色間界線明顯；體側中部另具多條寬窄不一之橘黄垂直帶，中部稍後另具一小垂直橢圓斑；背、臀鰭、尾鰭黑褐色；尾鰭末緣具白色新月斑。雌魚體一致暗綠色，口部黃色。以前所記載之異鰭擬盔魚(/Pseudocoris heteroptera/)為本種之誤鑑。

主要棲息於礁緣外圍的陡坡區，深度超過35公尺；通常大群的活動，組成方式為一雄多雌。主要以動物性浮游生物為食物。
