Biology

Mostly found in surf of sand beaches, but reported from trawl catches at depths up to 73 m. Also occur near rocks, pilings and other sources of cover and food. Usually form small groups. Also caught from piers and skiffs. Feed preferably on sand crabs but also eats clams and other invertebrates. Viviparous, female carries the developing young (Ref. 205). Minimum depth range based on ecology (Ref. 96339).

Amphistichus argenteus és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels embiotòcids.[5]

Descripció

  • Pot arribar a fer 43 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 30) i 2.000 g de pes.[6][7]

Alimentació

Menja preferentment crancs, tot i que també es nodreix de cloïsses i d'altres invertebrats.[6]

Hàbitat

És un peix marí, demersal i de clima subtropical.[6]

Distribució geogràfica

Es troba al Pacífic oriental: des de Bodega Bay (costes centrals de Califòrnia, els Estats Units) fins a la Baixa Califòrnia (Mèxic).[8][6][9][10]

Observacions

És inofensiu per als humans i la seua esperança de vida és de 9 anys.[11][6]

The barred surfperch (Amphistichus argenteus) is a species of surfperch native to inshore waters from northern California, United States to southern Baja California, Mexico. This species can reach a length of 43 centimetres (17 in) TL though most do not exceed 30 centimetres (12 in) TL. The maximum recorded weight is 2.0 kilograms (4.4 lb).[1] Like other surfperches, it gives birth to live young. The diet of the barred surfperch consists predominantly of sand crabs .[2]

According to the California Department of Fish and Game,[3] Barred Surfperch can be identified by bars and spots on sides which are often unbarred, as well as the absence of red tail.

Fishery

Barred surfperch are an important sport fishery for most surf fishermen in California, as they are common in the surf zone.[2] Anglers use sand crabs, sandworms, blood worms, shrimp, squid, cut fish, and small hard baits to catch these fish.
