Biology

Adults inhabit shallow rocky areas and tide pools. They hide in empty Strombus gigas shells (Ref. 13628), holes or troughs of rocks, or between algae (Ref. 5981). Herbivorous (Ref. 13442). Feed on invertebrates as juveniles and shift to diet of algae as adults (Ref. 94105). Unusual erectile nuchal crest (Ref. 41019). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205), and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal (Ref. 94114). Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters (Ref. 94114).

Scartella cristata és una espècie de peix de la família dels blènnids i de l'ordre dels perciformes.[10]

Morfologia

Els mascles poden assolir 12 cm de longitud total.[11][12] Cos lleugerament comprimit a la meitat posterior, amb la línia lateral no gaire visible, enarcada sobre les pectorals i després rectilínia, acabada sota el desè radi tou de l'aleta dorsal. Cap massís, amb el perfil anterior quasi vertical, les galtes inflades, els ulls tocant el perfil del cap i amb l'espai interorbitari menor que el seu diàmetre. Absència de dents canines a la mandíbula superior. És característica la mena de cresta de la regió nucal formada per una quinzena d'apèndixs cutanis filiformes. L'aleta dorsal, amb una dotzena de radis espinosos i 14 o 15 radis tous, presenta una petita incisura entre la part espinosa i la part tova. Aleta anal amb 2 radis espinosos i de 15 a 17 radis tous. Cos de color verdós olivaci brut, amb 6 o 7 bandes verticals fosques i irregulars.[13]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica

És un peix marí de clima tropical i associat als esculls de corall, el qual viu entre 0-10 m de fondària[11][15] a la zona on rompen les ones de les costes rocalloses tot cercant la protecció d'escletxes i forats o entre les algues.[13] Es troba a l'Atlàntic occidental (des de Bermuda, Florida[16] i el nord del Golf de Mèxic fins al Brasil),[17] l'Atlàntic oriental (des de Mauritània i les Illes Canàries fins a Möwe Bay -Namíbia-),[18] el Mediterrani meridional (incloent-hi Torremolinos i Taramay -a prop de Motril- a Espanya, Sicília i el Peloponès -Grècia-[19]),[20][21] el Japó[22][23] i Taiwan.[24][11][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]

The molly miller (Scartella cristata) is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Blenniidae, the combtooth blennies. This species is found in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and northwest Pacific Oceans. Its colour is a mottled tan, white, and black covering the body and fins. The head of this fish is covered with short hair-like appendages and has two very large eyes. This species reaches 12 cm (4.7 in) in total length.[2]

Reproduction

This blenny is oviparous; its eggs are demersal and adhesive.

Habitat

The molly miller is a marine tropical fish that lives in rocks or coral reefs 0–10 m below the surface. Coral reefs are perfect places for the fish to hunt and feed on the small crustaceans and algae that make up its omnivorous diet, and give them shelter and places to hide, as well.

Taxonomy and phylogeny

The molly miller was first formally described as Blennius cristatus by Linnaeus in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae with its type locality given as Ascension Island.[3]

A 2020 study which analysed the mitochondrial data of the genus Scartella for the first time showed that Scartella cristata is a lineage consisting of 5 clades: 2 in Caribbean waters, 1 in the East Atlantic/Mediterranean, and 2 in Brazil.[4] The Brazilian clades are sympatric from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul states (southern Brazil), with one clade being unique to Brazil and the other closely related to the eastern Atlantic lineage.[4]

Distribution

It lives in the western Atlantic from Bermuda, Florida, and northern Gulf of Mexico to Brazil, and in the eastern Atlantic from Mauritania and the Canary Islands to Namibia. The fish can be found in the southern Mediterranean, including near Milan, Sicily, and the Peloponnese (Greece).ref name="iucn status 19 November 2021"/> Records from the western Pacific are regarded as doubtful and may refer to the maned blenny (Scartella emarginata).[5]

La bavosa crestata (Scartella cristata) è un pesce di mare appartenente alla Famiglia Blenniidae.

Distribuzione e habitat

È questa l'unica specie di bavosa mediterranea ad ampia diffusione mondiale, infatti, coerentemente con la sua natura termofila, è diffuso in tutto l'Oceano Atlantico sia temperato che tropicale tra lo stretto di Gibilterra e l'Angola sul lato orientale e tra la Florida e le Bermuda a nord e il Brasile a sud su quello occidentale. Nei mari italiani non è rara. Segnalazioni nel Pacifico (Giappone e Taiwan) richiedono conferma.

Vive in acqua bassissima, talvolta tra i frangenti, in zone scogliose.

Descrizione

Apparentemente simile alle altre bavose, si distingue principalmente per i caratteri dei tentacoli cefalici, infatti il tentaciolo sopraorbitale è corto e sfrangiato ed esiste una fascia di corti tentacoli erettili sulla nuca che non ha nessun altro blennide europeo. La livrea è variabile con marmorizzature scure sul dorso che si estendono alla pinna dorsale e linee chiare verticali sul corpo, molto caratteristiche.

La taglia massima si aggira sui 10 cm.

Alimentazione

Erbivoro.

Riproduzione

Avviene in una cavità dove il maschio spinge la femmina. Dopo la deposizione il maschio fa la guardia alle uova.
