Pseudotrypauchen comprises a single species (P. multiradiatus) known from India, Malaysia, and Sumatra. The genus is unique within the Amblyopinae in having: pectoral fins longer than pelvic fins (113–205% of pelvic-fin length) and pointed posteriorly; short, compressed, and gently rounded teeth in the outermost tooth row in both jaws; and in having the first two pterygiophores of the second dorsal fin separated by a neural spine.
