Dugo se smatralo da je ovo ista riba kao i glavoč zlatac, iako je Kolombatović odavno ustvrdio suprotno. tek nedavno, žutac je postao priznat kao zasebna vrsta. Glava ovog glavoča je zlatno žuta, a tijelo je prozirno smeđe s tamnim točkicama i mrljama, te je prekrivenio malim ljuskama, glava i vrat nisu. Naraste do 10 cm. A causa della sua recente scoperta il suo areale è poco noto. Sembra endemico del mar Mediterraneo. Nei mari italiani è comune.
Vive su fondi duri, rocciosi e nel coralligeno fino a 30 metri di profondità.
È molto simile a Gobius bucchichi, a Gobius geniporus, a Gobius auratus e soprattutto a Gobius fallax, da cui non è sempre distinguibile.

Gobius xanthocephalus is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van grondels (Gobiidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1992 door Heymer & Zander.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009.[1]

Природний ареал охоплює води східної Атлантики від північного узбережжя Іспанії до острова Мадейра і Канарських островів, також у Середземному морі.[4] У Чорному морі відомий із Севастопольських бухт: Омега та Карантинна.[5][6]
Демерсальна морська риба, що мешкає на мілинах серед каміння.[3] Віддає перевагу кам'янистим субстратам, коралам, а також місцям із заростями морських рослин, таких як Posidonia oceanica. Тримається глибин від 3 до 36 м. Живиться макрофауною, яка живе на твердих субстратах, також супрабентосом.[3]
