Inhabits coastal waters down to depths of about 40 m, predominantly near the bottom. Feeds mainly on small fishes, crustaceans and polychaetes.

Found over sandy or muddy bottoms of coastal inshore waters (Ref. 35849, 47581). Feeds mainly on small fishes, crustaceans and polychaetes (Ref. 3424). Forms schools (Ref. 47581). Larger specimens marketed fresh or dried-salted but most of the catch made into fishmeal or discarded (Ref. 47581).

分布於印度-中西太平洋熱帶海域，西起斯里蘭卡，東至密克尼西亞群島，北自南中國海，南迄巴布亞新幾內亞。台灣西南部及南部沿海有產。

一般漁法以底拖網、待袋網、小型圍網捕獲。肉質細嫩，適合煮湯；或當延繩釣之魚餌或以下雜魚般餵食高經濟價值之養殖魚類。全年皆有產。

體呈卵圓形，背、腹部輪廓相當。體長為體高的1.76-1.90倍。眼上緣具二鼻後棘。上頜具一列尖齒，每一側前端具一犬齒，下頜也有少許犬齒；口裂斜，口可向前方伸出，有如管狀；吻部短於眼徑；下頜輪廓呈直線，向上成60度角。頭部不具鱗，體側被圓鱗，除胸鰭基部向上至背鰭軟條部基部，向下至臀鰭起點間之帶狀區域裸出外，其他部位均被鱗；腹鰭具腋鱗，背鰭及臀鰭具鞘鱗；側線完全，延伸至尾鰭基部。背鰭單一，硬棘部和軟條相連；胸鰭發達，似鐮刀形；尾柄細窄，尾鰭深叉形。體背銀灰色，體側銀白；體側另具不規則的黑斑或黑圈。各鰭淡黃或色淡。

主要棲息於砂泥底質的沿海地區。群游性，一般皆在底層活動，棲息深度可達40公尺。肉食性，以仔魚、小型甲殼類及多毛類為食。
