體側扁而高；背部輪廓隆起，體高以背鰭第I棘處為最高。頭小，頭背部顱骨裸露，具輻射狀骨質突起。吻略長，圓錐狀。口小，唇厚；兩頜等長，頜齒數行，圓錐形；鋤骨無齒。鰓蓋骨無棘；鰓耙細長。體被中大櫛鱗，頰部及眼後部被細鱗；側線完全。背鰭連續，硬棘XI，第III、IV棘最強大，軟條13；臀鰭硬棘V，第II棘較強大，軟條9；腹鰭起點在胸鰭基部後緣之下方，具I強棘；尾鰭淺凹形。體銀色而略帶黃色，鰭部分帶黑色。

Pentaceros japonicus, the Japanese armorhead or Japanese boarfish, is a species of armorhead native to the western Pacific Ocean from southern Japan south to New Zealand and Australia. It occurs at depths from 100 to 830 m (330 to 2,720 ft). It can reach a length of 25 cm (9.8 in). It is a commercially important species and can be found in the aquarium trade.
