Histocidaris variabilis observed in deep waters off to Hawaii by NOAA Okeanos Explorer mission (Hohonu Moana Okeanos Explorer Expedition (http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/okeanos/explorations/ex1504/welcome.html)). Note that the white "galls" on the spines are symbiotic barnacles.
