Zanthoxylum procerum Donn. Smith, Bot. Gaz. 23 : 4. 1897 A glabrate tree, 12-15 m. high ; branches of the inflorescence sparingly tomentulose when young, the older parts glabrous, angled and grooved ; twigs, petioles, rachis, and branches of the inflorescence more or less glandular, rather sparingly armed with short, conic, brownish prickles ; leaves equally pinnate ; leaflets 4-12, opposite, oblong to nearly oval or elliptic-obovate, 6.5-17 cm. long, 3-5 cm. broad, chartaceous-coriaceous, acuminate, obliquely narrowed or somewhat rounded at the base, lustrous, petioluled, glandularcrenate or entire ; midrib and lateral nerves more prominent beneath than above ; rachis channeled; inflorescence terminal, corymbose, many-flowered; staminate flowers: calyx about 1 mm. broad ; sepals 3, semiorbicular, minutely denticulate at the apex ; petals 3, imbricate, elliptic to nearly oval, concave, 1.5-2.5 mm. long, 1-1.8 mm. broad, obtuse at the apex ; stamens 3, longer than the petals ; anthers oblong to oblong-ovate ; rudimentary ovary sessile, conic; pistillate flowers: gynoecium 1-carpellary ; ovary globose, punctate, shorter than the style ; follicles ellipsoid, 5.6-7 mm. long, 4.6-5.5 mm. broad, brown, the glands elevated or impressed ; seeds ellipsoid to subglobose, 4.2-4.8 mm. long, 3.5-4 mm. broad, black, shining.
Type locality : Santa Maria de Dota, Comarca de Punta Arenas, Costa Rica. Distribution : Southern Mexico and Costa Rica.

A tree sometimes 13 m. high, with a grayish bark armed with small helmet-shaped prickles ; branches of the inflorescence minutely tomentulose, especially toward their ends, angled or grooved ; leaves equally pinnate ; leaflets 4-10, opposite, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 3-7 cm. long, 1.4-2.5 cm. broad, acuminate or rounded and sometimes emarginate at the apex, obliquely rounded at the base, rather dark-green and lustrous above, paler beneath, petioluled, chartaceous-coriaceous, glabrous, entire, opaque or with a few large glandular dots near the apex ; rachis channeled ; inflorescence terminal, corymbose, manyflowered ; staminate flowers not seen ; pistillate flowers : calyx 0.6-0.8 mm. broad ; sepals 3, rarely 4, triangular to semiorbicular, the apex denticulate ; petals 3, rarel3' 4, elliptic to oval, 1.5-2 mm. long, 0.9-1.3 mm. broad, obtuse or rounded at the apex ; gynoecium 1-carpellary ; ovary sessile, ovoid or subglobose ; style curved; stigma small; follicles globose to globose-ovoid, 4-4.8 mm. long, 3-4.5 mm. broad, dark-brown or blackishbrown, the surface bearing prominent elevated or immersed glands; seeds subglobose to ovoid, 3-4 mm. long, 2.5-3 mm. broad, black, shining.
Type locality : In Tamasopo Canon, San Luis Potosi. Distrihution : Known only from the type locality.
