Leaf-blades oblong, linear-oblong, or lanceolate, 2-11 cm. long, acute, mucronate, or notched at the apex, crenulate or undulate-toothed, rather prominently fine-reticulate, bright-green, sometimes paler beneath than above, ultimately glabrous above, with the hairs beneath borne on pustule-like bases, obtuse or subcordate at the base, short-petioled ; cymes sessile, the branches glabrous; sepals ovate to oblong, 3.5-4 mm. long, glabrous, the glands fully one half the length of the sepal-body ; corolla purple, 12-16 mm. wide, the larger petals 5-7 mm. long ; drupes subglobose, 9-11 mm. in diameter, purple.
Type locality : Hispaniola. Distribution : Hispaniola and Cuba.

Malpighia suberosa Small, sp. nov Leaf-blades oblong to oblong-ovate, 7-10 cm. long, rounded and minutely mucronate or retuse at the apex, crenulate, bright-green, but paler beneath than above, rather coarsely reticulate, sparingly hirsute above, with scattered hairs beneath borne on pustule-like bases, rounded or subcordate at the base, short-petioled ; cymes sessile, the branches glabrous, at least at maturity ; sepals ovate, 2.5-3 mm. long, glabrous, the glands nearly as long as the sepal-body ; corolla pink or white, 12-14 mm. wide, the larger petals 5-6 mm. long ; drupes ovoid, 8-10 mm. long, yellowish-red.
Tvpe collected north of Raimou, Nipe Bay, Cuba, May 6, 1909, /. A. Sha/er 17S1 (herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard.).
Distribution : Cuba.
