Annual herbs. Leaves linear, crowded at the base or whorled. Stipules persistent, membranous. Inflorescences cymose, long-pedunculate, with whorled bracts at each node. Perianth segments 5, free, greenish. Stamens 5. Ovary superior, 3-locular, surrounded by a 5-lobed, nectariferous disk; each loculus with numerous ovules; stigmas 3. Fruit a membranous 3-locular capsule. Seeds without an appendage.
