Pterocactus australis is found in the southern Patagonian steppes of Chile and Argentina. This taxon is one of the furthest south occurring species in the family cactaceae. P. australis is typically found at elevations of 280 to 700 meters in locations that have often been subject to overgrazing by introduced livestock.
