Neotibicen pronotalis pronotalis (formerly Tibicen pronotalis pronotalis; see Hill et al. 2015) is found mainly in the northern Great Plains of the United States. It is known from Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota (U.S.A.) associated with various isolated trees and riparian habitats including willows (Salix spp.) (Sanborn & Phillips 2013).
The song of N. pronotalis, a droning zzh-zzh-zzh, is identical to that of N. dealbatus (Hill et al. 2015).
