Herb or small shrub. Leaves opposite or ternate. Inflorescence composed of lax panicles or racemes. Pedicels articulated at apex. Calyx subequally 5-toothed; tube cylindric, becoming enlarged and fleshy in fruit. Corolla 2-lipped. Stamens didynamous, the upper pair reduced to staminodes, declinate. Style exserted, shortly 2-lobed.
Fruit ± spherical, berry-like.
