Description of Cienkowskya

Desmothoracid, cell body is enclosed in an irregular homogeneous capsule, axopodia emerge through small pores. The capsule tapers into a short conical stalk. The type species, C. mereschkovskii (Cienkowski, 1881) Schaudinn, 1896 was described from a marine habitat, but has not been recorded subsequently. A second, freshwater species, C. brachiopus, produces zoospores with one flagellum.
