Perennial herbs or soft shrubs. Leaves dentate. Inflorescences axillary or terminal spike-like cymes. Bracteoles 2, linear, as long as calyx. Calyx divided almost to base into 5 linear lobes. Corolla distinctly 2-lipped.
Fertile stamens 4, exserted. Style 1, filiform. Capsule with 3 or more seeds per loculus, the seeds borne on retinacula.
