Small, often multi-stemmed tree. Bark grey to pale brown, rough and fissured with distinct pale lenticels. Leaves opposite, imparipinnate with 4-7 pairs of leaflets and a terminal leaflet; leaflets lanceolate to oblong; margin entire or sometimes obscurely crenate-dentate. Flowers in many-flowered racemes with a stout rhachis, spectacular, bright orange-red with a yellow centre; corolla bell-shaped, up to 10 cm in diameter, shallowly lobed with 4 large stamens protruding. Fruit a long. slender capsule, 30-55 cm long, flattened, spirally twisted, pale brown, dehiscent.
