Mentocrex is a genus of birds in the flufftail family, Sarothruridae. The genus includes two species, both of which are endemic to forests in Madagascar.

Species

The genus contains two species.^[1]

• Madagascar wood rail (Mentocrex kioloides)
• Tsingy wood rail (Mentocrex beankaensis)

These two species were formerly placed in the genus Canirallus together with the grey-throated rail (Canirallus oculeus). A molecular genetic study published in 2019 found that the grey-throated rail is not closely related to the Madagascan and tsingy wood rails. The grey-throated rail is related to the Rallidae while the wood rails are closely related to the Sarothrura.^[2]

Mentocrex J. L. Peters, 1932 è un genere di uccelli della famiglia dei Sarotruridi. Comprende due specie, entrambe endemiche delle foreste del Madagascar^[1].

Tassonomia

Comprende due specie:^[1]

• Mentocrex kioloides (Pucheran, 1845) - rallo del Madagascar;
• Mentocrex beankaensis Goodman, Raherilalao & Block, 2011 - rallo di Tsingy.

In passato venivano entrambe classificate nel genere Canirallus insieme al rallo di bosco golagrigia (Canirallus oculeus), ma uno studio di genetica molecolare pubblicato nel 2019 ha dimostrato che il rallo di bosco golagrigia non è strettamente imparentato con il rallo del Madagascar e con quello di Tsingy, bensì con i Rallidi, mentre gli altri due sono più imparentati con le specie del genere Sarothrura^[2].
