Its calyx lobes vary from acuminate to round-tipped so fall within the variation expected of Penstemon cyaneus. The corolla tubes averaging about 3 cm long and anther sacs measuring 2-3 mm long distinguish Penstemon cyaneus from the similar Penstemon cyananthus, which is known from adjacent states but not from Montana. This population, however, differs from other Penstemon cyaneus populations by its long-hairy anthers that open by strait pollen slits (and the slits run almost the entire length of the pollen sac).
