They are native to Norway, Yugoslavia, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Belarus, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Poland, Georgia, Czech Republic, Finland, Afghanistan, Belgium, Austria, Azerbaijan, Iran, Eastern North America, Tajikistan, Armenia, Lithuania, Germany, and Latvia. They have simple, broad leaves and green flowers. Flowers are visited by Volucella inflata, Rhingia campestris, Syrphus vitripennis, and Melangyna umbellatarum. Individuals can grow to 20 m.
