Perennials. Inflorescence a contracted panicle. Spikelets 2-5-flowered; all bisexual; glumes unequal to almost equal, shorter than the spikelet; callus obtuse. Lemmas keeled, 3-5(-7)-nerved, 2-lobed at the apex with an awn arising from the sinus, shorter than the lemma; the lobes sometimes also awned. Palea almost as long as the lemma; keels glabrous, without wings. Lodicules glabrous. Awn shorter than the lemma
